Top Automakers Lead Smart Manufacturing

Top Automakers Lead Smart Manufacturing

Top tier makers in automotive industry is leading the way in the adoption of smart manufacturing technologies, nearly 50% of technologies they use now are of smart manufacturing, which make more real time data from all nodes on value chain available in the co-operation within the factory and interchange with suppliers, finds ABI Research.

These technologies include Additive Manufacturing (AM), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), Augmented Reality (AR), Collaborative Robotics (cobots), and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platforms. Automakers include Audi, VW, Ford, Honda, Daimler and BMW have planned or deployed these technologies, says ABI Research.

The best part to build up real time connection within value chain include procurement, logistics, production and warehouse with smart manufacturing technologies is helping manufacturers able to make mass-customized production, high-efficiency production, autonomous decision-making and maintenance forecasting a reality, suggests Dr. P. C. Chang, General Manager of China Productivity Center (CPC).

Dr. Chang believes that with the advance of global consumption pattern changing, a new business model driven by customers of smart production and sales (C2B) is born. To establish a new model business with “customer success,” makers need to adopt smart manufacturing technologies to interchange data in real time within all nodes of production. It is not only able to help manufacturers meeting the market need of multi-customized & high-efficiency mass production, but also can assist makers quick response to and predict market needs as well, asserts Dr. P. C. Chang.

But the transformation of Taiwanese SMEs to smart manufacturing, Dr. Chang worries that if the way of management and maintenance is not changing first, it might get half the result with twice the effort. He suggests Taiwanese SMEs to implement Lean Integration Management System first to nourish key capabilities including stabilization, less changes, quick response, flexible processing, more customized & low-volume, short-delivery time, and less manpower, in the mean time when adopting smart manufacturing technologies.

China Productivity Center (CPC) founded in 1955, is a heavyweight and the leading business management training center in Taiwan.
