Smart manufacturing helps the future of Taiwan precision machinery industry

Smart manufacturing helps the future of Taiwan precision machinery industry

Taiwan's machine tools export value is said to be the fourth largest in the world. Made in Taiwan (MIT) products have been spread to major industrial countries in the past half century, and they are now actively entering emerging markets. The main advantage of Taiwan's machine tools in the global market is that the products have a high degree of flexibility, not only can they be customized, but are also multi-functional, unlike other brands.

TIMTOS 2019 focused on two major themes: "Smart Manufacturing" and "Industry 4.0". Robotics, sensors, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), cloud computing, big data analytics, these digital solutions can help traditional manufacturing companies build intelligent, high-performance production lines, making Industry 4.0 more suitable for customization and small batches which customers need. AI technology and collaborative robots are also the highlights of this exhibition. Human-machine collaboration is made possible by integrating artificial intelligence with manufacturing systems. This new way of collaboration can further reduce manual errors, improve production accuracy and quality, and help achieve safer and more efficient production.

In the field of molds used in the automotive industry, the multi-axis movement of five-axis machine tools can process workpieces without dead ends, ensuring a smooth overall production of parts for the automotive, train and solar sources. In response to the new generation of aerospace products focusing on green energy and lightweight materials, Taiwan has gained abundant professional experiences in manufacturing equipment for the development of high-value and high-quality machine tools for aerospace.

The machine tools industry in Taiwan has a complete industry chain to produce precision machinery that meets the needs of the aerospace, automotive, medical and 3C industries. In 2017, Taiwan's machinery industry output value exceeded by NT$1 trillion. It is predicted to achieve a total output value of NT$2 trillion in 2025. The government, industry and academia are focusing the road towards smart machinery and smart manufacturing to meet market demands. Taiwan’s machine tool industry is introducing the innovation capabilities of R&D institutions and academic know-how, and then applying the information & communication technology to help the future development of precision machinery industry.
