POSA：Wireless transmitted tool holder to embrace 5G network
Exclusive interview with General Manager of POSA MACHINERY, Peng Sen Jung.
POSA has two major exhibit themes at TIMTOS 2019. The first will be the revealing of "intelligent spindle diagnosis system". This particular theme will integrate real-time connection – and display the information on spindle operation from POSA’s clients on their booths. The second theme is POSA’s latest innovation: ‘Wireless Transmission Ultrasonic tool holder’. This particular tool holder is designed with POSA's own technology, with patents filed on the transmission structure, in cooperation with the wireless transmission technology that Taiwan’s research institution has developed for electric cars. The combination has created a high speed transmission efficiency for ultrasonic tool holders, in comparison to the method of using wired transmission in the past. POSA’s wireless transmission technology has presented the industry greater processing efficiency and quality. As a result, the Wireless transmission Ultrasonic tool holder has also won the 2019 Taiwan Excellence Award. It is not only the first in Taiwan's spindle industry, but also the only award-winning company and product.
The wireless transmission technology facilitated by POSA’s Wireless transmitted ultrasonic tool holder can effectively reduce the problem of ultrasonic blade heating. Furthermore, the speed can be increased from a traditional 8000RPM to 24000RPM. Under the structure of POSA’s patented wireless transmission, the speed of ultrasonic transmission efficiency can be increased from 23% to 46%, efficiency and accuracy greatly improved.
Compared with 2017, POSA has also shown steady growth in 2018. In 2019, commercial 5G network signals will begin to be introduced globally. The application is not limited to mobile phones, but a great variety of connected home appliances or electronic devices. A great amount of electromagnetic signals will be transmitted. Yet under the current condition of using metal as the main material for mobile phone cases that would affect the transmission, the industry would bound to find new materials in substitution to metal. It seems that the high-end mobile phone market will be dominated by sapphire and ceramic materials. They are particularly hard and brittle material that is difficult to process. It is easy to cause tool wear and breakage during processing. Consequently, ultrasonic machining becomes an outstanding solution to shatter the structure of the workpiece for further machining, to reach precision and extend tool life.
POSA has therefore developed the wireless transmitted Ultrasonic tool holder. In addition to the ultrasonic instruments of the hardware, special material tools, ultrasonic oscillators, POSA also provides customers with a variety of different materials in assisting customers to build comprehensive ultrasonic machining solutions.
In the past, "Intelligent Manufacturing" or "Industry 4.0" mostly are considered to be the issues for machine tool builders. And a great amount of so-called "smart spindles" builders in Taiwan often insert sensors in the spindles to fulfill the request from equipment manufacturers on receiving signal of spindles. POSA has never been satisfied with this situation and has been constantly finding solutions to assist Taiwan industry be engaged in intelligent manufacturing.
After observation, feedbacks and discussion with our users and counterparts, we have identify that the problem lies in the insufficiency of resources for mid-small scale manufacturers. Many SMEs do have the motivation to invest in smart manufacturing but often limited by lack of research ability. As over 90% of Taiwan's industrial structure is dominated by small and medium-sized enterprises, this issue is imminent, and it could make a huge difference if POSA could help them enter intelligent manufacturing. This is the background of POSA on deciding to invest resources to develop the "smart spindle diagnostic system". One advantages of POSA is out mass production on spindles - more than 20,000 to 30,000 spindles per year. We could draw the real data from these spindles and build database particularly for spindle machining data. Along with university research teams, POSA uses Cloud Technology to send the spindle data back to the server for "big data analysis". Customers can then use mobile APP to real-time monitoring of the data on the spindle. The next stwp is to develop advanced inspection system that prevents damage and optimize service. Through the combination of hardware and software, we will help customers build their intelligent factory.
Speaking of the trends in manufacturing industry in the new year, it is not to denied that the Chinese market will be greatly affected by the Sino-US trade war, and that the growth of the economy will have a downturn. POSA will still have great opportunities in the Japanese market, as the company has been actively involved in the Japanese market for several years. This year, we have received both the entire set of spindles and OEM orders. Ever since our establishment, we have believed that price competition is not a sustainable strategy for the company, because the winners from price competition at present will be the losers of price in the future. Therefore, POSA will continue to develop innovative products and develop high-end market in the future. We are the success case that proves Taiwanese manufacturers can also perform will in the middle and high-end markets.
