For any company working on anything to do with autonomous vehicles, EV, testing – and lots of it – is crucial. Keysight Technologies, a California technology firm, is deeply involved in helping the automotive industry accelerate the commercialization of connected cars and autonomous vehicles. “Constant connectivity, dozens of IoT sensors, complex communications on and off the vehicle, and ultraprecision timing are all needed to maintain automotive safety in the era of autonomous driving,” the company notes.

Keysight makes testing equipment that helps companies develop ADAS, EV, and vehicle-to-everything communications (V2X) systems. V2X is a short-range wireless technology that is expected to be instrumental in making autonomous vehicles safe for drivers and their passengers as well as pedestrians. Keysight’s testing equipment can help companies ensure that their products work on next-generation 5G mobile networks that are now being rolled out around the world. Because it promises a massive increase in available bandwidth, 5G could transform the automotive industry, because autonomous vehicles need to generate and receive mountains of data.

So far by 2020, Keysight opened 4 “automotive customer center” in Boeblingen, Michigan, Shanghai and Nagoya, the center features labs for electronic testing and measurements, technical experts and state-of-the-art test equipment. Keysight also recently unveiled a cybersecurity program to help automakers protect their vehicles from hackers. Many newer, “connected” cars are fertile ground for cyberattacks through their infotainment systems, telematics, engine control units (ECUs) and other on-board systems. Based in Santa Rosa, Calif., Keysight is a publicly traded firm with 2019 sales of US$4.3 billion.

Founded in 1989, Askey specializes in state-of-the-art electronic and network communications products. A subsidiary of computer giant Asus, Askey has recently poured its considerable research and design capabilities into the home and auto markets, making innovative products that feature WiFi, Bluetooth, and LTE connectivity.

At AMPA, Askey is showing the Connected Car Cam+ dashboard camera, which keeps an eye not only on the road ahead, but monitor the driver, passenger or even the back of the car. Because it records and streams in real time, the Car Cam+ provides a vital record of the moments leading up to an accident. When its built-in gyro sensors detect a collision, the Car Cam+ automatically uploads video footage to the cloud for safekeeping. It even performs many of the ADAS functions found on newer high-end cars, including lane detection and forward collision warnings. It also accepts voice commands for hands-free operation and has a driver’s face recognition detector.

Baoruh helps buses run on time, and helps fleet managers stay on top of their vehicles. The Kaohsiung-based company specializes in hardware design and embedded software development, a combination that allows it to create innovative, customizable, and durable embedded devices for use on public transportation, fleets, and other vehicles. For example, Baoruh sells a “One Touch Smart Bus Solution” that includes a contactless smart card validator for riders with transit cards but can also accept cash and e-money. It also makes e-ticket systems, for use in places like museums and amusement parks, and e-payment readers for retail stores. Other products include telematics, tachographs, vehicle trip records, and multifunctional driver consoles.

For 2020, Baoruh is launching a new digital tachograph, along with new mobile payment devices, smart bus solutions, and improved fleet management services. A key to Baoruh’s success is its ability to connect its hardware with backend systems and secure servers that can validate payments, provide real-time route and station information (for bus passengers, for example), and let managers track the locations and status of fleet vehicles, among other functions. That makes Baoruh well-positioned for the growth of Intelligent Transportation Systems and devices connected to the Internet of Vehicles, which will create demand for new business models, services and products.
