Taiwan Offering Fishery Solutions Amid and Post COVID-19

11/May/2020

The coronavirus pandemic has dramatically changed the way foods are prepared and made available for public consumption around the globe. Taiwan, an island nation surrounded by abundant fishery resources and a reliable trade partner, is offering the international community a variety of fishery solutions amid and post COVID-19.

The pandemic has profoundly disrupted the global food supply chain at every level, and the related economic problems have significantly impacted people’s access to food. In many countries, harvests are currently going to waste due to work and travel bans.

For example, meat processing plants in the U.S. underwent shutdowns, and farmers in other countries were forced to dump dairy and fresh produce as demands fell sharply amid lockdowns. The export bans imposed by various countries have also furthered disruptions in the global food supply chain and world trade.

The vast fishery resources surrounding Taiwan has enabled the country to establish highly developed coastal, offshore and ocean fishery industries. The annual output value of Taiwan's fishery industry is about US$1.3 billion. The country’s ocean fishery is ranked among the top three in the world, with tuna longline fishing ranking first in the world.

Taiwan’s fishery industry is supported by the nation’s strong ICT base and features special advantages in aquaculture technology. Taiwan’s complete and innovative aquaculture technology solutions offer the latest in areas including new variety breeding, cultivation, reproduction and production, aquaculture industry management technology, feed production technology, and fishery processing technology. The commercial value development of gene-transfer aquatic products is also offering promising prospects for global partners.
