Taiwan Helping the Shift Towards Smart Education Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

13/May/2020

The situation of the coronavirus pandemic may have reached a turning point, and Taiwan for certain would want to play its part in the global recovery that is within grasp.

According to the latest Business Environment Risk Intelligence (BERI) report, Taiwan is ranked the third-best in the world, and the best in Asia, as a destination for investment amongst the 50 countries being assessed upon. And one of the significant indices of economic recovery would be the number of international events being held in-country.

According to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) statistics, Taiwan held 163 international meetings in 2019, ranking 4th in terms of number of events in Asia. It was a record high ranking in 5 years, and tied with the best record Taiwan achieved previously. The capital city, Taipei, alone held 101 meetings, ranking 5th among all Asian cities.

Though the global business events industry has been widely impacted by COVID-19 in the first half of 2020, the sector is still full of opportunities in the second half. In light of the impressive results of Taiwan’s epidemic control efforts, ICCA has announced that it will go ahead with its planned annual congress, which is set to take place this coming November in Kaohsiung, the harbor city and southern economic center of Taiwan.

The 2019 ICCA Congress in Houston attracted 1,000 attendants from 75 countries. The 2020 ICCA Congress in Kaohsiung is estimated to welcome 1,000+ participants, and will be the association’s first ever hybrid congress, combining both online and onsite agenda, and may become textbook material for a new format of association meetings in the future.

In promoting Taiwan’s business events industry, the Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT) launched the MEET TAIWAN initiative and entrusted TAITRA to implement the project. MEET TAIWAN positions the country as a destination for business events, and aims to enhance the quality and efficiency of services as well as Taiwan’s brand and image in the global business events market.
