TAIWAN Offering Quality Bicycles for Fostering Green Policy Goals Amid and Post COVID-19

18/May/2020

Millions of commuters across Europe and many cities around the world are currently turning to cycling to avoid crowded public transport or to keep social distancing throughout the coronavirus pandemic. Taiwan, also known as The Bicycle Kingdom, has been supplying a variety of top-quality bicycles and related products to the international community amid the pandemic.

As more and more countries begin to ease lockdown restrictions and get their economies up and running again, they are also creating new bicycle paths to encourage cycling among citizens. The move not only meets green policy goals, it also encourages social distancing while having the added benefit of stimulating growth for the bicycle and its related industries.

Across the European cities of Oslo, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Paris, Milan and Vienna, authorities are removing old infrastructure while making new routes for riders. Capitals including London, Paris, Brussels and Rome are setting up new paths; authorities in France are subsidizing bicycle repairs and e-bike purchases; in Barcelona, existing bike lanes are being widened to create safer distances among cyclists.

Taiwan, a major global bicycle supplier, produces 70% of the world’s mid-to-high-end bicycles. Taiwan also supplies more than two million traditional bicycles globally. Road bike comprised 20-30% of shipments in the past few years, while mountain bikes took up 60% of U.S.-bound shipments.

Giant and Merida, the two major bicycle companies from Taiwan, as well as Advanced Group, Darad Innovation Corporation, and O-TA hold prominent places in the global bicycle industry. Many of Taiwan’s bicycle component manufacturers such as Kenda Tire and TBS Group Corporation (maker of the smallest sized bicycle power meter), are also the preferred supplier partners of global brands.

More recently, Taiwan's has been developing the electric bicycles segment. The export value of electric bicycles has surpassed that of traditional bicycles in the first quarter of 2020.
