Taiwan Starts Gradual Loosening of COVID-19 Restrictions

26/May/2020

Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced today that Taiwan will start to gradually loosen up the COVID-19 prevention restrictions that are currently in place nationwide. So far, Taiwan has been relatively safe from the global spread of COVID-19. The government’s efforts have been effective in curbing the coronavirus, with no lockdowns taking place and most businesses and schools operating as usual.

As of today, May 26, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in more than 5,524,652 confirmed cases worldwide. As of writing, a total of 441 confirmed cases were reported in Taiwan, with 44 consecutive days of zero domestic transmissions, 350 imported cases, 7 deceased cases, 416 cases released from isolation, and the remainder hospitalized in stable condition, according to Taiwan’s CECC.

With the number of infections under control and the situation stable, the government has decided to begin loosening up domestic restrictions while maintaining effective border control. If no domestic cases and no community infections are observed after 8 weeks, CECC indicated that a large-scale total loosening can be implemented starting June 7, which means all domestic activities will no longer be restricted.

In enforcing large-scale easing, the government has also been encouraging citizens to incorporate epidemic prevention practices into their daily lives since April 30. For example, maintaining social distance or wear a mask in crowded spaces, washing hands frequently, and cooperate with real-name based systems for certain activities or events, which is necessary for contact tracing purposes. Moreover, local authorities must also practice effective management before June 7 when total loosening takes place.

Although the global MICE industry has been greatly affected by COVID-19, it is expected that business activities will start to pick up as the pandemic begins to wind down in the second half of the year.
