Clean and Energy-saving CDI Technology Sets New Standard for Water Purification
Organic CDI modular device
Some technologies in the water treatment industry have entered their mature stage. On the basis of little difference in water purification effects, operational efficiency has become a new competitive keyword, and it also goes in line with the sustainable energy-saving trend to focus on life cycle carbon footprint in recent years. In 2019, the Organic Filter Co., Ltd. officially launched in Taiwan the "Capacitive De-Ionization” (CDI) technology that only a few companies in the world can master. As the CDI technology has such characteristics as low energy consumption (Only 0.5 kWh is needed to process a ton of water), high water yield (greater than 85%) and high operational flexibility (easiness for customization), it is not only more environmentally friendly, but also provides enterprises with a new and highly flexible deployment option with low operating costs.

Widely used in such facilities and equipment as pure water process, hard water softening, heavy metal treatment, groundwater treatment, reclaimed water treatment, wastewater treatment, boiler water treatment and cooling cycle water treatment in the industrial, commercial and household fields, the CDI technology is considered a mature technology yet full of potential for further development.

Chen-Hsuan Fan, President of the Organic Filter Co., Ltd., said: "Our CDI products were exhibited at the beginning of last year (2019), displaying new models that can produce 10 tons and 100 tons of water every day. Our CDI products not only aroused a warm response at that trade show but also won many cooperation projects quickly after the exhibition. In the past six months, our equipment has been tested and launched on a small scale, showing satisfactory performance and stability. In the future, we will not only verify the long-term durability of our products, but also develop more application solutions to upgrade and inject innovation energy for Taiwan’s water treatment technology.” In addition to sharing its test and application results, the Organic Filter Co., Ltd. will exhibit its R&D machines for laboratory testing in this year (2020), helping customers to quickly and painlessly introduce the CDI equipment into their existing systems.

Due to high water prices abroad, the CDI technology is mostly used in the water-circulating systems, while the Organic Filter Co., Ltd. focuses mainly on water purification and wastewater treatment in Taiwan and actively develops reclaimed water applications in line with the policy of the Water Resources Agency. Chen-Hsuan Fan mentioned: "For the household market, our main focus is placed on the water purification facilities on the water tower of a terraced house. Compared with the traditional RO technology, our product has higher efficiency and produces less wastewater. We also recommend it for industrial applications, as the CDI pretreatment can bring in many benefits to the back-end processes. For example, as it can reduce the hardness of water, our customer can reduce the size of resin tower used for water softening, resulting in the reduction of space for waste treatment or the operating costs due to less amount of medicine that needs to be added into the water purification process. In particular, as Taiwan has recently begun to strengthen the control of ammonia nitrogen emissions, it can be applied right away in this regard."

The Organic Filter Co., Ltd. has transferred its core technology from the Graduate Institute of Environmental Engineering of National Taiwan University and has established its own R&D department to develop independent key technologies, to optimize innovative applications and to build up links with industry alliances. Committed to building modular, customer-oriented and systematic CDI equipment, our R&D team that is composed of 17% of doctoral-level researchers and 67% of master-level researchers has gained a number of patents for its research results. Our R&D team owns a technical level comparable to that of the international standards and serves as a successful model for technology transfer from the academia to a professional company.
