According to the latest report from Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), "AR6 Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability from", human activities have exacerbated climate change and severely impacted the global ecological environment. Many developed and developing countries are marred by unprecedented drought and devastating floods caused by climate change and global warming. The livelihood and safety of millions of people around the world are jeopardized. As specified by CNN, the economic loss of the large coastal cities due to flood damage is estimated to reach US$ 1 trillion in 2050. In consequence, improving water infrastructure such as water storage system, purification system, and sewage system has moved up to the top of the list of government priorities.

The Research Center for Environmental Changes, Academia Sinica, estimates that the spring rainfall in Taiwan will decrease by 13.2% within the next 20 years, and the number of consecutive dry days will be 1.5 times higher than today. To protect existing water resources and ensure water efficiency, the government has earmarked NT$ 100 billion in Forward-Looking Infrastructure Development Program, in order to build a stable and high-quality water supply and sewage system for both residential and commercial use.

It goes without saying that green building and green community are the future of Taiwan cities. Market Research Future forecasts a compound annual growth rate of 14.3% from 2022 to 2027 in the global green building market. As ESG and sustainability becomes an ever more prominent issue, green buildings which optimize energy efficiency, make good use of the natural surroundings to mitigate impact, and with sufficient monitoring systems to ensure smooth functioning at all times gain a crucial status in the planning of future cities. These buildings require smart water meter and water management system which harvests rainwater, reduces water usage, and recycles and reuses wastewater. All these complex systems and equipment translates to huge business opportunities waiting to be explored.
