AI Boom Drives Recycled Water: Taiwan International Water Week 2024 unveils the business opportunities

In recent years, the rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology has driven the revolution of data processing and context creation. Artificial intelligence thrives on data. In the processing of handling large amounts of data, online services and generative AI products, data centers use cooling towers that require a significant amount of water to cool down the AI server during operation. With the growing development of AI, the humongous amount of water consumed could make the global water crisis worse. To alleviate this harmful impact, the development and application of water treatment and reclamation technologies have matured expeditiously in countries all over the world. In turn, it led to vast business opportunities in the water industry.

Faced with the growing demand for water resources, the global water treatment market is expanding at full tilt. According to the statistics from Straits Research, the size of the global water treatment market was valued at US$65.1 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach US$119.8 billion by 2032, with a compound annual growth rate of 7%.

Shaolei Ren, a researcher at the University of California, Riverside (UCR), pointed out that AI is a resource-consuming technology. For every 5 to 50 questions that users ask ChatGPT, ChatGPT uses up about 500 ml of water to come up with an answer. According to the research data from JPMorgan, the total water consumption in data centers around the world increased by 6% annually from 2017 to 2022. At the current speed of development, by 2030, all AI data centers in the world are estimated to exhaust 450 million gallons of clean water to cool down the units on a day-to-day basis, which is the equivalent of 681 Olympic-standard swimming pools.

As a technology hub, Taiwan has established an AI industry chain throughout the island and works toward becoming an AI Island. Recently, the CEO of NVIDIA, Jensen Huang, revealed that NVIDIA plans to set up Asia's first AI R&D center in Taiwan within the next five years. AMD has also submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, applying to establish an R&D center in Taiwan for their A+ Global R&D Innovation Partner Program at the end of 2023.

The setup of the AI industry in Taiwan means more and more water is being consumed. That is to say, the recycle and reuse of water resources, wastewater treatment, and desalination have become one of the key infrastructures in tech companies and data centers. In order to prevent AI from hogging water resources and competing with humans for clean water, the government in Taiwan has actively invested in high-tech water production projects, including water reclamation and desalination plants, to a greater extent. Related companies also recognize the increasing importance of the water treatment market and strive to stabilize water sources for industrial use.

The booming of the AI industry brings huge business opportunities to the water reclamation and treatment industries, as more products, technologies, and solutions are needed to push forward.

In 2024, TIWW will unveil the latest water reclamation and treatment technology and fresh business opportunities in the exhibit area of Water Treatment to provide solutions for the global water crisis. Showcasing Taiwan's ability to become the heart of the global water treatment market, TIWW is the best platform to promote water sustainability.
