From Technology to Application: Targeting Sustainable Smart Water Business Opportunities in Looming Water Crisis

Water resources were once considered "inexhaustible". As the global population grows and economic activities continue to thrive, climate change becomes ever more extreme and people gradually realize the scarcity and value of a safe water supply. According to The United Nations, by 2025, nearly 4 billion people around the world will face water stress. Water shortage not only affects the quality of life of individuals but also poses a threat to overall economic development and social stability. This drives the demand for smart water management and sustainable water resources.

As science and technology develop and advance, smart technologies are progressively introduced and now frequently implemented in water systems. Aside from the capability of managing water resources effectively, smart technologies also facilitate the reclaim and reuse of water. These innovative technologies are now key to the pursuit of water sustainability. According to research and analysis by Mordor Intelligence, the smart water management market is expected to grow from US$16.08 billion in 2023 to US$30.8 billion in 2028. A significant compound annual growth rate of 13.89% signifies the rapidly rising demand for smart water solutions in countries around the world. Smart water technologies completely change the traditional water resources management model. They ensure swift and accurate responses in the monitoring, optimization and management of water resources. Not to mention the harnessing and analysis of real-time data substantially improves water management efficiency.

The Asia-Pacific region has already made great progress in smart water applications. According to statistics from Astute Analytica, the value of the smart water management market in the Asia-Pacific region has reached US$3.7 billion in 2023, and is expected to grow to US$10.29 billion by 2032, with a compound annual growth rate of 12.04%. Asia-Pacific region is clearly the dominant force in the global smart water market and the prospect is very promising.

To achieve Goal 6 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 - "Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all ", the rise of smart water applications and their implementations in sustainable water management is undoubtedly critical to the relief of the global water crisis. Domestic suppliers also actively take part in securing sustainable water supply by leveraging Taiwan’s strength in information and communication technology and offering outstanding productions and solutions using Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for customers around the world. As a pioneer in innovative technology, Taiwan will continue to lead in sustainable water management and seize business opportunities in smart water technologies globally.
